My family loves Chinese food! I sometimes attempt to make my favorite dishes but get overwhelmed with all the strange ingredients so I end up just doing a Panda Express run instead, haha! This is a super simple recipe that just about anyone can throw together. I love serving it with a side of edamame. Doesn’t it look delicious? It totally is. 😉
Ingredients
- 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1" cubes
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3 Tbsp. soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp. oyster sauce
- 3/4 tsp. garlic powder
- 3 Tbsp. cornstarch
- 1-1/2 cups broccoli cut into small florets
- sesame seeds
Instructions
- Place 1/2 cup cornstarch in a large plastic baggie. Add chicken cubes and toss to coat.
- In a large skillet, pour enough canola oil to cover the bottom. When heated up, add chicken and cook until medium brown - be sure to not let the chicken stick to the pan.
- While your chicken is cooking, make sauce: Mix water, sugar, soy sauce, oyster sauce, garlic powder and cornstarch in a small saucepan. Stir over medium-high heat until thickened. Pour over browned chicken. Stir to combine and simmer about 3 minutes.
- Add broccoli florets to chicken and cover with lid. Let steam until tender to your liking.
- Serve chicken and broccoli on a bed of rice and sprinkle with sesame seeds. ENJOY!!

Wonder how it would work with substituting the oyster sauce with teriyaki? A whole bottle of oyster sauce would be wasted in this house unfortunately! 🙂
liv says
Did you try teriyaki sauce instead? If yes how did it turn out
Jen says
Nope, I didn’t try teriyaki sauce. The sauce in the recipe is SO good!! Let me know if you try it and how you like it!
Jenn says
This dish looks amazing! I’m going to try it tonight, and cannot wait. Would it be okay to leave out the oyster sauce, or be able to substitute it for anything else?
Jen says
I think it would be just fine to leave out the oyster sauce – did you already give it a try? Thanks for the comment!
Maria says
I just made this dish. Absolutely delicious! I substituted the oyster sauce with teriyaki sauce and added a bit more garlic powder. Served it with rice and steamed broccoli. Will make it again.
