Slow Cooker BBQ Shredded Chicken Sandwiches – Throw 3 ingredients into the crock pot and in a few hours, you have tasty shredded chicken to serve on buns or rolls for dinner. Easy and delicious!
I love my crock pot. I’m always amazed at the awesomeness that comes out at dinnertime after throwing a few things inside in the morning.
This recipe is no different. Only three basic ingredients and a few hours of cooking time gives you juicy chicken breasts. Shred ’em up and place on buns and boom. Quick, easy dinner. Perfect for a busy day when cooking’s not an option.
Slow Cooker BBQ Shredded Chicken Sandwiches
Ingredients
- 3-4 pounds chicken breasts
- 1 cup water
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1 14-oz bottle barbecue sauce (I love Sweet Baby Ray's!)
- hamburger buns or roll for serving
Instructions
- Place chicken breasts into crock pot. In a bowl, mix together the remaining ingredients. Pour over chicken and give a quick stir to combine.
- Cover and cook on HIGH for 6 hours or until cooked through. Before serving, pull chicken out of crock pot. Shred chicken with two forks and place back into crock pot. Stir to mix with sauce. Place shredded chicken in hamburger buns. Squeeze BBQ sauce on top, if desired. Enjoy!

Hi there! Stopping by from Pin It Thursday, and had to come check out your slow cooker chicken. This is a great idea for nights when my son had football, and we can come home to a warm, tasty dinner. Thanks for a great idea. Pinning!

Making this now. On high?
Melissa McCloud says
Three hours on high cooked mine. Took out and will warm up later. Maybe it’s my crockpot.

Hi Melissa! I hope that even though it cooked quicker, it was still delicious! I guess every crock pot cooks a little differently maybe? Maybe 6 hours on low would be best for next time? My crock pot has settings like “4 hours on High”, “6 hours on High”, “8 hours on Low” and “10 hours on Low” so I used the 6 hours on high and it was really tender and juicy. But my crock pot is sort of old and maybe cooks differently? Either way, I hope you enjoyed it!

It says to put in remaining ingredients in the crockpot, does that include the BBQ sauce as well or is that just to put on the sandwich? Thanks!
Jen says
Hi Tayler! Put everything including the BBQ sauce into the crock pot – you can leave a little in the bottle for topping your sandwiches after. I hope this helps!
Tayler says
Thanks Jen! It’s cooking now, can’t wait to try it!

Hi Jen! 🙂 I’m wanting to try this for dinner tomorrow. How many servings does this come out to? Thank you for posting the recipe! I can’t wait to try it!
Jen says
It’s about 6 servings, just depends on how much meat you put in each sandwich! They are so good, I hope you like them!

My husband and I LOVED this recipe! It was so simple and delicious. We are having family over this weekend and was wondering, would it work if we doubled everything? I was not sure if it would come out the same if I doubled the ingredients and cooking time.
Thank you!
Jen says
Yay! I’m so happy you liked it, Lorena! I’m sure it would come out great if you doubled it! I wouldn’t double the cooking time. It might take maybe an extra hour depending on the size of your crock pot and how stacked your chicken is inside it. The more spread out the chicken, the less likely it will need time added. Go ahead and double everything else, I’m sure it will be great! Thanks for your comment!

I gave this recipe to my mom who has been cooking for the construction workers working on her house. She was looking for something easy and delicious. She didn’t have any brown sugar so she added a little peach preserve instead. She said it was “out of this world”. Thanks for the recipe:)
Jen says
So glad to hear everyone liked it! Thanks for commenting! Adding peach preserves sounds delicious!
Kerry says
Just curious, did you use frozen or thawed chicken breasts? I want to make this for the weekend. 🙂
Jen says
Hi Kerry! I used thawed but I’m sure frozen would work well, too. Just add a little extra cooking time. I can’t wait to hear how you like it!

Made this for dinner today. I already had the ingredients on hand, so easy and so good. Thanks for posting this! It is delicious. I think some added bacon bits would be good for next time, or smoked bacon, make it like a pork bbq sandwich. Thanks!
Jen says
It’s such an easy dinner! I’m glad you liked it!
Daisy says
Could you substitute chicken thigh for the breasts? Should any ingredient amounts change for it?
Jen says
You can definitely substitute chicken thighs. You shouldn’t have to alter the recipe. Thanks!
